Notebook computers, laptops, netbooks: welcome to the word of portable computing power

Call it a notebook, a laptop, a netbook, whatever you will. They're all portable computers designed to free you from your desk and keep you working - or playing - wherever you go.

Notebooks and laptops can be as powerful as desktop computers, though at a price premium. Netbooks tend to be lighter, less powerful and cheaper - their main purpose is to access the Internet, be it for email, browsing, social networking or getting work done on the cloud.

Modern notebooks, netbooks and laptops can sport the latest mod cons: bluetooth, firewire, wifi. Some netbooks now have slots for simcards.

A notebook or laptop is an ideal replacement for a desktop computer when space is limited, while a netbook is an ideal mobile complement to your existing system. However, if all you want is Internet on the go - netbooks win hands down.

Essential laptop accessories

  • Every laptop needs a carrying case to protect it from scratches while on the move. These range from simple slip-on covers to netbook backpacks and trolley cases on wheels. Take some time to browse the options to find the case that best suits your particular needs.
  • Unless you really love using a trackpad, get a mouse. It doesn't have to be a tiny laptop mouse either, unless you have small hands. Find a mouse that is comfortable to use. A wireless mouse is handier for travelling.
  • Headsets are essential if you're going to be making Skype-type calls from your laptop or watching videos/playing music in public places. Even normal office work can produce lots of beeps and other sounds which can disturb those around you. Laptop speakers are usually not very good, so a headset will also give you better sound when you want sound.
  • For travelling, get a spare charger and a universal plug adapter that will adapt to sockets around the world.
  • A USB Internet stick will give you access to the mobile telephone data network - handy when you aren't in a WiFi area.
  • A portable USB external drive can help augment the often limited hard drive space. Look for a lot of space packed into the tiniest package you can afford.
  • A security lock with a steel cable helps protect your notebook computer from theft when you have to leave it unattended. One end goes into a special slot in the notebook, while the cable loops around something that cannot be lifted or carried away easily.

Quick facts about notebook computers

  • The smallest notebook computers are called UMPDs - Ultra Mobile Portable Devices. These can have screens around 4.8 inches, and weigh less than pound.
  • Google is developing a special operating system, Chrome OS, for netbooks that only access the Internet.
  • In 1982, Epson released the HX-20, the first notebook computer as we understand the term today. It weighed 3.5 lb; it had 16K RAM and no hard drive!

How to Cool Your Laptop Notebook Computer

go.tagjag.com - geeks.pirillo.com It's important to keep your notebook computer cool. It adds wear and tear to your machine when it gets too hot. I've gone through a few different notebook coolers, and done reviews on each of them. I'm seriously considering a switch to the Laptop Lifts though! http
